Record high temperatures during the recent drought coupled with high mortality in juvenile salmon has raised awareness of the role pathogens and diseases may play in Central Valley salmon. This symposium covered topics such as: what is known about pathogens and diseases in wild salmon populations in the Central Valley, what monitoring and research gaps exist, and how other systems manage to control or reduce impacts of pathogens/disease. A key deliverable from this workshop will be the development of recommendations for improving disease research and monitoring in the Central Valley with an emphasis on exploring management actions related to reducing direct and indirect mortality caused by disease.
