Meetings Rescheduled to Incorporate Nearly 1,000 Public Comments - Council to Hold Special Meeting on June 16

May 2011

The Delta Stewardship Council agreed to alter its upcoming meeting schedule to accommodate the inclusion of valuable public comments into its fourth staff draft Delta Plan.

In order to do so, the Council will not meet on May 26 and 27, as originally scheduled. Instead, the Council will reconvene in June.

“We’ve received almost 1,000 comments now and many of them are very good. We need time to go through all of these comments before we write the fourth staff draft,” Council Executive Officer Joe Grindstaff said.

The fourth draft is expected to be released on June 13. The Council will then hold a special one-day meeting on Thursday, June 16 to discuss big-picture questions about the scope and role of the Council and the Delta Plan with one another and members of the public.

“We need more time just to talk about the hard, thorny issues and listen to each other. What are we trying to achieve with this plan? Who are we trying to be? We need time to reflect,” Council member Felicia Marcus said.

Coequal goals

The Delta Stewardship Council was created in legislation to achieve the state mandated coequal goals for the Delta. "'Coequal goals' means the two goals of providing a more reliable water supply for California and protecting, restoring, and enhancing the Delta ecosystem. The coequal goals shall be achieved in a manner that protects and enhances the unique cultural, recreational, natural resource, and agricultural values of the Delta as an evolving place."
